AFF Statement on the Passing of Paul Weyrich

(DES MOINES) – Nicole Schlinger, President of American Future Fund, issued the following statement today upon learning of the passing of Paul Weyrich:

“Paul Weyrich unapologetically embraced conservative, free-market principles, understanding that individual liberty was at the heart of this country’s founding, and he worked tirelessly to preserve our rights. The conservative movement has lost an iconic leader and trusted friend. His contribution toward the mission of groups such as American Future Fund cannot be overstated. We will miss him, but hope to carry on his legacy to the best of our ability.”

Obama pick a leading oil shale opponent

Sen. Ken Salazar (D-CO)

President-elect Barack Obama has pegged Sen. Ken Salazar (D-Colorado) as his pick for Secretary of the Interior. AFF believes this pick is problematic, given Sen. Salazar’s fierce opposition to oil shale.

This summer, AFF produced its seven-point, America First Energy Agenda. One of the major points in the agenda was the extraction of domestic oil shale to help rid our dependence on foreign dictators for our energy needs.

Salazar has staked his ground, and likely will continue to advocate against this precious domestic fuel from his perch in the cabinet.

AFF will be watching closely.

The Alternative

AFF supports the alternative offered by House Reps.

American Future Fund believes government is overstepping its bounds with the latest $15 billion auto makerbailout proposal. AFF instead fully endorses the alternative American Automotive Reorganization and Recovery Plan as put forth by Reps. John Boehner, Eric Cantor and Mike Pence. Find it HERE.

Their sensible proposal belives American auto workers, taxpayers and families deserve better. Their plan requires hard benchmarks and calls on these companies to lock in their restructuring plan within weeks - not months or years. Additionally, their plan calls for a process for reaching an expedited agreement rather than nationalizing U.S. auto companies.

Finally, this plan would offer interim financing as a supplemental insurance, rather than creating yet another taxpayer-funded bailout. Please click on the link above for the full plan.

AFF: No Car Czar

American Future Fund believes that there should not be an appointed “car czar,” believing instead that the free market should sort out winners and losers - not a bureaucrat appointed by the federal government.

While we support a more stringent oversight whenever our tax dollars are used, the bailout in its current form fails to identify the key problems with automakers’ management styles, and a lack of important union concessions. Until these items are addressed, U.S. taxpayers should not be on the hook for propping up a failed system.

Indy Racing turns its back on U.S. Energy

Des Moines, IA – American Future Fund (AFF) today launched “Race,” a radio ad which urges Hoosiers to call the Indy Racing League (IRL) and tell them to continue using American ethanol in its race cars.

In a multi-year deal announced on Nov. 18, the IRL named APEX-Brasil as the official ethanol supplier for the IndyCar Series. As a result, the Indy 500, an American institution, could be powered with foreign fuel.

“It’s amazing that amid all the progress we have made toward energy independence, the IRL decides to set us back,” said AFF Communications Director Tim Albrecht. “It’s mind-boggling as to why the league would take this action in an economic downturn. This is a slap in the face to American farmers and workers.”

Currently, there are more than 180 ethanol producers in the United States. The IRL’s decision blocks them from pumping an American-made product into their cars, and opts for foreign competitors to control a monopoly on the market.

American Future Fund has long called for measures that lead the United States to energy independence with its “America First Energy Agenda.” Found HERE, the agenda strongly supports the use of homegrown renewable fuels.

“Our hope is that local citizens will stick up for what’s right, and demand the IRL rescind its deal with Brazil,” continued Albrecht. “This is a matter of energy independence and keeping our jobs here at home. The IRL may turn its back on the people of Indiana and the Midwest, but AFF will steadfastly stand with America’s energy producers.”
